Tableau

Slide

Put a Tableau viz on the big screen so the analysis your team already built stays in front of everyone.

What you can do

  • Display a viz – Show any workbook published to Tableau Public
  • Full-bleed – Hide the toolbar and navigation so the viz fills the screen
  • Multiple views – Put different vizzes on different slides

Before you start

Displayful loads the viz in a browser with no Tableau sign-in, so this works with Tableau Public or a view with guest access enabled. A viz on Tableau Cloud or Tableau Server that requires authentication will not render on a device.

Set it up

Tableau vizzes are displayed using Displayful's built-in Website slide — there's nothing to connect.

Publish to Tableau Public

  1. In Tableau Desktop, choose Server → Tableau Public → Save to Tableau Public.
  2. Open the published viz in your browser.

Get the URL

  1. Click Share below the viz.
  2. Choose Embed Code and copy the src URL out of the snippet — Displayful needs the URL, not the whole <iframe> tag.

The share dialog usually includes the parameters below already. If you copied the URL straight from the address bar instead, you'll need to add them yourself.

Add the parameters — these are required

A bare Tableau Public URL will not render on a device. Without parameters, Tableau redirects to the viz-home page, and that page sends X-Frame-Options: SAMEORIGIN, so the slide comes back blank. Use:

https://public.tableau.com/views/<workbook>/<view>?:embed=y&:showVizHome=no&:toolbar=no&:tabs=no&:device=desktop
  • :showVizHome=no – the important one. Stops the redirect, which is what makes the viz displayable at all
  • :embed=y – render the viz on its own, without the Tableau Public page around it
  • :toolbar=no – hide the toolbar, which nobody can click on a wall anyway
  • :tabs=no – hide worksheet tabs if the workbook has several
  • :device=desktop – force the desktop layout. Without it Tableau picks a layout from the iframe size and a portrait screen can end up with the phone view
:toolbar=no does not remove the attribution bar on Tableau Public — the "View on Tableau Public" strip along the bottom is part of the free service and stays put. The parameter does work on Tableau Cloud and Tableau Server.

Making it fill the screen

A Tableau viz renders at whatever size its dashboard was authored at. If that's a fixed size, it sits in the top-left corner of the screen with empty space around it, however large the display is — no URL parameter changes that.

For a viz you control, fix it at the source: in Tableau Desktop open the dashboard, and under Size choose Automatic before publishing. The viz will then expand to fill whatever it's shown in.

For someone else's public viz you can't change the authored size, so expect letterboxing.

Add it as a slide

  1. In your slideshow, click Add slide → Website.
  2. Paste the viz URL.
  3. Save. The viz will render on your devices.
Anything on Tableau Public is public by definition — assume the data is visible to the world. For internal numbers, use a Tableau Cloud or Server view with guest access instead, and confirm it loads in a browser where you aren't signed in before putting it on a device.
